Marco's Story

Their foster brought Marco and his siblings back a few dayd later due to concerns of lethargy and failure to thrive. One of the kittens tested positive for panleukopenia and sadly passed away despite all efforts and intensive treatment provided to them. Marco and his siblings were exposed, although they were never infected with the disease. They were still treated for the exposure as a precautionary measure. This was an isolated instance that occurred months ago and is not linked to our current cases.

All cats and kittens are vaccinated while in our care for panleuk and other age-appropriate vaccines and boosters; however, many cats that come into our care have never been vaccinated, which makes them vulnerable to the highly infectious disease.

Marco's other littermates have all been adopted out and are thriving with their new families. Marco, however, faced unrelated health problems and has been in our care obtaining treatment for severe constipation.For the past couple of months, Marco has been receiving enemas multiple times a day along with medication to help with his bowel movements. He is doing significantly better and will be soon be available for adoption.

At this time, it is anticipated that he may require ongoing medication and dietary management to maintain normal bowel function. Many cats on similar regimens go on to live fulfilled, comfortable lives with a consistent routine and monitoring. 

Marco is a testament to the incredible care our medical personnel and animal care providers present to our animals. With our ongoing treatment of paleuk cases and exposure, we wanted to spotlight Marco's journey and show that there are positive outcomes from this infectious disease.
