We are celebrating National Kitten Day today!
While you're feeling the hot weather outside, shelters all around Florida are feeling the swelter from kitten season. From March to October, there is a spike in kitten births resulting from the longer and hotter days that cause female cats to go into heat.
Friends of Strays highly recommend the spaying and neutering of all pets to help prevent the number of unplanned litters and the number of strays that overwhelm the streets. All animals that enter our shelter are altered before they become available for adoption.
Spaying and neutering your pets does more than just prevent unplanned litters; it also helps reduce overpopulation of strays and the number of animals in shelters.
There are also health benefits to spaying and neutering your pets. It limits breast and testicular cancer risks as well as reduces the chances of reproductive infections and complications. Altering your animals also limits behavioral stress, such as females going into heat and males' urges to spray and get into fights.
Overall, animals live longer, healthier lives when they are spayed and neutered, and we want everyone, pets and their families, to be set up for a happy ending when they adopt from us!
We are thankful we are able to care for around 100 cats at any given time. One of the fundamental reasons we are able to take in as many animals we do is because of our incredible system of foster families. We here at Friends of Strays strongly believe love saves lives, and it's because of our growing number of fosters that we are able to grow the number of animals we are able to rescue!
Friends of Strays is always looking and accepting fosters at any given time. We are especially constantly in demand for individuals to take in bottle babies, which are kittens that still need to be fed via a bottle nipple every 2-3 hours. By fostering bottle babies, we have the space and ability to take in and care for a larger number of older kittens and adult cats.
We supply fosters with everything they need to care for our animals and cover all expenses and medical care. If you are interested in fostering, you can find more information about the program and the link to apply using this link: https://www.friendsofstrays.org/foster!
